As a result, colonial goods such as the cocoa bean became scarce.
The cocoa shortage of the early 19th century was also a huge challenge for the chocolatiers of Turin. In the praline capital of Italy began a feverish search for a substitute product. However, the solution to this problem was right at their doorstep. Back then, Piedmont was already famous for its delicious hazelnuts. And so the people of Turin began to add roasted and ground hazelnuts to their chocolate creations. The make-shift solution quickly became a sweet speciality called "Gianduja", which is considered the first version of dark nougat. Even today, dark nougat is a popular filling for chocolates and sweet pastries. But it is also eaten plain or spread on bread rolls as a cream.
