Pural Organic Bread Slices

:

Bread is more than just food. No other food is as symbolic as bread. More than 10,000 years ago, people began to cultivate fields and settle down. Grain was milled into flour and bread was baked. In Europe and the Orient, bread has been the number one staple food for many thousands of years. That is why it has always had a great symbolic and spiritual significance. Because bread was essential for survival, every ancient high culture had its own gods for grains, seeds and harvest. Among the Greeks, Demeter was the goddess of fertility, and among the Romans she was called Ceres (from which the word cereals was later derived). The Teutons were technically less experienced in agriculture than the Romans. When it came to the harvest, however, they did not leave anything to chance, either. That is why they had their own goddess for harvest and fertility. In order to store enough grains in the pantries in autumn, sacrifices had to be made for Freyr throughout the year.

Over the millennia, bread has become a symbol in many cultures for everything you need to live. As a wedding gift or when moving into a new house, bread and salt are still handed over in many places, because magical properties were formerly given to those two foods. They should protect the householder from witches and the influence of evil spirits. In addition, they still stand for prosperity, welfare and hospitality. For special holidays, special breads are baked in many cultures. Among the Jews, for example, unleavened flatbread – called “Matzos“ – is served for Passover. Because bread was especially vital for the ordinary people, wastefulness was not tolerated. In the Middle Ages, such dishonorable behavior was referred to as “bread crime“. There are many legends in which rich people prefered to let their bread get moldy rather than share it with the needy. For this crime they are punished in a supernatural way.

Even today, bread is one of the most popular dishes in Europe. In Germany, it is even the name given to two meals: Brotzeit (snack in between) and Abendbrot (dinner). In contrast to our ancestors, however, we do not have to eat the same kind of bread every day. Today, we can choose between various black, brown, white or mixed-type breads, depending on the individual taste. In the German bread directory, almost 3,000 bread specialties are currently registered. For this reason, one could try out a new bread every day for more than 8 years. However, most of the breads are only regionally available.
