What are your plans for the fourth Thursday in November? In the USA you don't have to think twice. Because on this day, Thanksgiving is celebrated across the country. Along with Christmas and Independence Day, Thanksgiving is the most important holiday in the United States. Its tradition supposedly began as early as in 1621, when a small colony of settlers near Plymouth Rock almost starved to death. They only survived the severe winter with the help of the Wampanoag Indians. When the settlers brought in the first harvest the following year, they celebrated a festival of gratitude with the Indians. Thanksgiving was already an official holiday in the 18th century, but it was not until 1941 that the festival was set on the last Thursday in November. Today, many Americans also take the Friday off afterwards to enjoy a long weekend. Most people celebrate Thanksgiving with the whole family. In the center of the celebrations there is a big feast. Traditionally, there is turkey with mashed potatoes, sweet potatoes or other autumn vegetables. Apple or pumpkin pie is usually served for dessert.

What should not be missing on the Thanksgiving dinner table is the cranberry sauce. The red sauce is almost as important as the turkey. In fact, Americans consume nearly 20% of their annual cranberry harvest on Thanksgiving. Many Europeans confuse cranberries (Vaccinium macrocarpon) with red cowberries (Vaccinium vitis-idaea). Although both belong to the genus of blueberries, they are two different species. The cowberry is smaller and tastes tart and sour. The cranberry is much larger, has a firm pulp and tastes extremely sour. In Germany it is also known as „Großfrüchtige Moosbeere“ or „Kranbeere“. However, mostly the English name cranberry is used as well.

Sauces, compotes, jellies, fruit spreads or juices can be made of cranberries. Dried and sweetened, they refine salads and mueslis. The Indian tribes on the American east coast also valued the red berry as a medicinal plant. Sailors in the early 19th century used dried cranberries on long voyages to protect themselves from scurvy. Due to the high proportion of vitamin C, vitamin A and valuable minerals, cranberries are now considered a superfood. They are also a high-quality basis for vitalising dietary supplements such as Urovit from GSE. The GSE Urovit Cranberry Powder consists of 95% cranberry juice concentrate in powder form. It is already pre-portioned and just needs to be dissolved in liquid. The GSE Urovit Capsules contain organic cranberry concentrate powder and were also designed for daily use. This way, GSE supports vitality and wellbeing with the power of cranberries.
