Dr. Goerg Coconut Butter

:

The South Sea Islands have an almost magical attraction to people of the Western world. At the thought of white sandy beaches and turquoise waters many start to rhapsodize - especially in winter. However, there is no cold season in the sunny South Pacific. Therefore, here you can harvest the most delicious fruits throughout the year. When talking about the paradisiacal conditions in the 19th century in Europe, some adventurers decided to seek good fortune in the South Sea. By creating farms and plantations, it led some of them to considerable wealth. The goods produced there filled the grocery stores in the old country with sugar, coffee, tobacco and spices. However, the countless islands of the South Sea also offered ample room for alternative life concepts. The various life reform movements in Switzerland and in Germany propagated among others naturopathy, vegetarianism and a nature-loving life. With this attitude, one absolutely belonged to the outsiders in the German Empire, because in Wilhelmine Germany the industrial development at the expense of nature was regarded as a sign for strength and progress. Therefore, some freethinkers attempted to realize their visions south of the equator. One of their most curious representatives was August Engelhart.

The native of Nuremberg graduated a pharmacist's assistant apprenticeship as a teenager, where his interest for a conscious lifestyle was aroused. Shortly afterwards, he joined a group of vegetarian nudists. Because one could end up in prison quickly when being nude in public, Engelhart moved to German New Guinea in 1902. On the island Kabakon he acquired a coconut plantation in order to implement his vision of love of nature. From now on, he wore no clothes anymore and fed almost exclusively on coconuts. He spread various advertising brochures in Europe about his new lifestyle. With like-minded people, who accepted his call, he founded the "Sun Congregation Equatorial Settlement Community". Coconuts then played an increasingly important role in Engelhardt’s teaching; he was downright obsessed with them. He called them, among other things, as the philosopher's stone. In addition, he claimed that with a pure coconut diet one may attain immortality.

Although now it is certain that the coconut does not provide immortality, it is still an incredibly versatile fruit. While it is still green nearly one liter of coconut water is located in its interior. There are numerous reports of stranded castaways, which were saved from dying of thirst by it. If one buys a fruit in Europe one usually does not get a whole coconut but only the hard kernel. If it is cracked, the 1-2 cm thick pulp can be found on the inside of the shell. It is firm, has the distinctive coconut flavor and can be eaten raw. In Asia the precious coconut oil has been extracted from the pulp for centuries. There it belongs to the main edible oils, because of its high lauric acid concentration but it is becoming more popular in the Western World. The fresh pulp of the coconut can also be processed into delicious coconut butter, a true all-rounder in the kitchen.
