Physical fitness is anything but a short-lived trend. On the contrary: balanced strength training is considered an effective way to counteract the negative effects of a sedentary everyday life. Those who exercise regularly and strengthen their muscles feel fresh and vital for longer, even in old age. But even athletes who train a lot in their disciplines additionally rely on strength training. Nowadays, even golfers go to the gym.

The origins of weight training and bodybuilding are in ancient Greece. Almost 4,000 years ago, it was known that repeated motions would strengthen the body. For this reason, lifting and throwing heavy stones or races in full armor were part of the daily training program. Initially, these exercises had the sole purpose of increasing the combat ability of the warriors. Later, the best athletes of the different Greek city states competed against each other in supraregional competitions. These Panhellenic Games were held in honor of the gods in Corinth, Delphi, Nemea and of course Olympia. At the very beginning all competitions were done in helmet and armor. Later, they were only worn when carrying the weapons. In all other disciplines the athletes were naked. Women were forbidden to compete, married women were not even allowed to watch. Nevertheless, two women managed to become Olympic champions in the chariot race, because in this discipline, the owner of the horse and carriage and not the driver was chosen as the winner.

Athletic competitions were very popular in ancient Greece early on. In many places, male athletes were carved in stone or painted on vases and jugs. While the proportions of the female body changed again and again in the arts, those of men remained surprisingly constant. Broad shoulders, strong arms and the famous sixpack are just as popular today as they were with the ancient Greeks. With the end of antiquity, the social importance of sports, however, was largely over. Because most people simply had no time for it. In the Middle Ages, the sporting activities were limited to wild ball games on the holidays. Only the nobility competed in various fighting game tournaments.

In the 21st century, sport has returned to the centre of society. A variety of sports and physical activites form a leisure industry for body-conscious people who want to devote more time to their health.
