Allos Organic Bread Spread
Bread is an indispensable part of everyday life in many parts of Europe. In Germany it is even that popular that dinner is often referred to as ”Abendbrot“ which means ”evening bread“. The scent of freshly baked bread is mouth watering for many people. The dipping of bread is probably the oldest method of eating bread. The first breads were unleavened flatbreads baked in the Orient and North Africa. These light breads did not have to be cut, they could simply be torn into bite-sized pieces. They were then dipped in bowls of sauce or into the stew. Over the centuries, many delicious dips for bread were created in the Orient. The most famous of these is undoubtedly the hummus. Where exactly it comes from is not really known. In the Middle East, however, you get it everywhere. About a dozen countries argue passionately about who has really invented it. And, of course, they argue about whose hummus tastes the best. The blending of pods and vegetables and the processing of dips and starters has a centuries-long tradition in the Orient.
Nowhere else one eats as much bread as in the Arab world. On the Arabian Peninsula, the per capita consumption of bread is over 150 kg per year. The undisputed leader, however, remain the Egyptians with an average of 180 kg of bread per year. In Germany only half of the amount of bread is eaten. However, the German rye bread is also much more substantial than the light flatbreads. And because they are that substantial, brown breads and wholemeal bread are usually sliced. In the Middle Ages the bread was dipped into the bowl. Especially simple people without their own dishes ate their bread this way. Due to the ”thirlage“, the peasants were only allowed to grind their grain in the mill owned by their feudal superior. For this performance, however, they had to cede some of their flour. And because the miller also liked to take some for themselves, bread for bread baking was relatively expensive. That’s why most peasants used their grain to make porridge instead of baking bread.
Only when the price of flour fell massively in the 18th century, bread did become a staple food. Instead of sharing a large bowl, every family member now had their own plate and even cutlery. Now, the bread loaf was sliced and then buttered. In the heydays of the poets and thinkers buttered bread was a popular snack during long discussions. Civic families who had come to prosperity showed this with sandwiches that were thickly garnished with sausages and cheese. In Switzerland, cottage cheese was often served on the bread. This became extremely popular in America in the 19th century. That changed only around 1880, when an even creamier cream cheese came on the market in the USA. It was nearly 20 days durable and quickly became one of the most popular spreads.
In Europe, since the early 1970s, the refrigerator has been standard equipment for every kitchen. Thanks to the improved storage possibilities, new types of cream cheese were demanded. For decades bread spreads were almost exclusively based on meat or dairy products. Since the turn of the century, there has been a distinct trend towards vegetable spreads. On the one hand, more and more people want to dispense with animal products. On the other hand, the variety of vegetable spreads is now that great that each flavor is offered in different nuances.
