Lebensbaum Organic Coffee

:

The Italians are known for their joie de vivre. They have been envied for their levity and cheerfulness from their northern neighbours for centuries. Especially the Germans cherish an almost proverbial desire for Italy. Its foundation was probably laid by Goethe when he published the ”Italian Journey“ in 1829. Italy had a strong inspiring effect on the German poet. He overcame his writer's block and simultaneously worked on several manuscripts. Away from everyday life in cold Germany he also created over 1,000 drawings and watercolours. Even 200 years after Goethe Italy is very popular for German visitors. If you have tasted the sweet life ”la dolce vita“ once, you also want to take something from this way of life back home. And because the way to one's heart is known to be through the stomach, there are Italian restaurants in (almost) every German city. In Munich there are more than 400 of them. Florence and Siena don't even have that many Italian restaurants combined together. No wonder that Munich is often referred to as the ”northernmost city in Italy“. But even if the city at the Isar has significantly more Mediterranean flair than some other German metropolises; it cannot keep up with the original. That's why Italy has been one of the most popular vacation destinations for the Germans for almost 50 years.

Once arrived in Italy, many tourists try to adapt to the locals; according to the proverb: ”When in Rome, do as the Romans do.“ Still, the visitors from Northern Europe can usually be identified very quickly. Firstly because of their clothing. Especially the outdoor functional clothing that is very popular in Germany is not compatible with the ”bella figura“ for the Italians. The same applies to sandals. Especially in combination with socks they are completely unthinkable for Italians. In addition to clothing, it is especially the coffee, that reveals the Italy visitors. Whether in Rome, Siena or Florence, a coffee or ”caffè“ on the piazza belongs to everyday life. But beware: If you order a caffè in Italy, you get a little cup of espresso instead of the expected cup of coffee. In Southern Europe, espresso is by far the most consumed coffee. For breakfast or during the morning it becomes a capuccino with plenty of milk foam. In terms of caffè the Italians do not make experiments. In its native country the espresso still is the most favourite type. The coffee mix drinks from American coffee shops could simply not be established in Italy so far.

The birthplace of Italy's most popular hot drink is Milan. The espresso is especially distinguished from other coffee variants by two things. For espresso, the coffee beans are roasted darker; thus the bean loses more caffeic acid than with lighter roasts. In addition, the espresso powder is ground much more finely than coffee powder. The finer degree of grinding is particularly important for the successful preparation. Proper espresso can only be prepared with a portafilter machine. Seven grams of espresso powder are firmly pressed in the portafilter. The brewing process takes only about 25 seconds. 95° C hot water is pressed through the powder at a pressure of 9 bar. When the finished caffè then runs into the cup, it forms a creamy layer on its surface: the ”crema“. Those who do not want to purchase an espresso maker with portafilter or are travelling much, are preferring the Italien coffee pot (also called ”moka“). However, one cannot brew a real espresso with it. Due to the low pressure of just 1.5-3 bar no stable crema can be made. Nevertheless, the ”moka pot“ ensures an equally aromatic taste experience - provided you have good beans. You can find them in best organic quality at Lebensbaum.
