Pukka Organic Tea

China is considered the homeland of tea. In China the first tea plants were cultivated many thousand years ago. In the beginning, tea leaves and their infusions were demanded in particular as a medicine. The discovery of tea is attributed to the legendary Emperor Shennong. In ancient times he worked on an extensive corpus about the effect of medicinal plants. Because he tested most of them on himself, he often became ill due to the contained herbal poisons. Because Emperor Shennong was very concerned about hygiene, he always boiled his drinking water. One day the wind blew a few leaves into his cup. The water began to change its color and obtained a pleasant aroma. As Shennong examined the shrub and the aroma of its leaves, he noted, that they also had a detoxifying effect. From now on he regularly drank a hot infusion of these leaves. When the Chinese exactly began to sip the miracle drink is undeterminable. What is certain is that in the year 221 BC a tea tax was levied. This suggests that tea had risen to an everyday beverage.
During the period of the Three Kingdoms (220-280 n. Chr.) the officials at the court of King Wu were known for their resistance to alcohol. The king often organized great feasts during which his ministers were allowed to get drunk unrestrained. However, minister Wie Yao had a sensitive stomach and could not do with alcohol. As a substitute he drank tea. Being always sober Yao must have been some kind of role model for young intellectuals for it soon became a habit to drink a cup of tea instead of wine among the sophisticated upper class. About 300 years later Buddhism flourished in China. In the monasteries, the monks began to drink green tea in order to not fall asleep while meditating. Because at that time many people meditated, the demand increased quickly. Thus many monasteries started to grow tea by themselves. Drinking tea has been an integral part of everyday culture in China for centuries. In the cities increasingly large and small teahouses emerged. There one met friends in an elegant atmosphere, negotiated with business partners or listened to lectures of scholars. Numerous large teahouses even had their own stages for musicians and acrobats.
The importance of tea in China also becomes obvious on the basis of traditions that are closely related to the tea plant. Because tea plants can’t simply be shifted they were a symbol at many weddings for the fact that a marriage as well needs solid roots. An engagement was only perfect if the girl accepted the tea, which was offered to her in the house of his parents. Today one can of course accept a cup without marriage plans. And who is invited for a cup of tea in China should do so. Because drinking tea collectively to maintain friendships can’t be replaced by anything.
