All scientific laboratories use microscopes. For over 200 years, the magnifying instrument has been an indispensable tool for science. The first microscopes were developed by Dutch spectacle grinders about 400 years ago. However, it was the naturalist Antoni van Leeuwenhoek (1632-1723) who made their invention famous. A trained draper and civil servant, he had neither a university degree nor any scientific training. Nevertheless, he devoted all his free time to building his own microscopes. By precisely grinding the small lenses, he was able to achieve a magnification of up to 270 times. Leeuwenhoek put everything under his microscopes: Insects, plant fibres and even drops of water and blood. In the process, he discovered that we are never completely alone. For the view through the microscope revealed a world teeming with tiny little creatures everywhere. In 1676, Leeuwenhoek was the first person to see bacteria.
Leeuwenhoek sent his discoveries in over 300 letters to the Royal Society of London. And although he made spectacular new discoveries almost monthly, he remained the only serious microscopist of the 17th century. His contemporaries regarded his ingenious invention merely as a technical gimmick. It was not until bacteria and microorganisms were identified as a cause of diseases in the 18th century that their intensive research began - under the microscope, of course. After two centuries of research, probably 95% of all bacteria species in the world are still unknown. How did humans manage to survive and even evolve despite this overwhelming number of invisible germs and pathogens? We have our immune system to thank for that: an internal body defence system consisting of a complex network of organs, cell types and molecules. The immune system is something like the gatekeeper of our organism. It removes invading microorganisms, foreign substances and eliminates defective body cells. In most cases, we do not notice this.
However, when the immune system overreacts on contact with a usually harmless environmental substance, it is called an allergic reaction. According to estimates, 20-30 million people in Germany alone are affected by at least one allergy. By far the most common forms are hay fever and dust mite allergy. Food and contact allergies are also becoming increasingly widespread. There are several reasons for this: On the one hand, environmental pollution from exhaust fumes and chemical residues has increased. Furthermore, city dwellers in particular have little direct contact with animals, meadow, field or forest plants. Many researchers assume that their bodies therefore increasingly forget how to deal with such allergens. Another popular theory is that today's hygiene standards are so high that the immune system no longer knows the right countermeasures and therefore overreacts.
Research into the causes and treatment of allergies is one of the great challenges of medicine in the 21st century. Those affected often have to make major changes to their daily lives. This is clearly evident, for example, in the case of a fragrance allergy. In this case, the body reacts to the fragrances contained in cosmetics, deodorants, washing powder, cleaning agents or room sprays. If these are not consistently avoided, allergic reactions can occur. The search for suitable cosmetics and care products is therefore a particularly challenging task.
