Incidentally, we are only bitten by the females. The male mosquitoes are vegetarians and mainly live on plant nectar. The females live up to their name. To be able to lay eggs, they need a very specific protein. And this is not found in flowers, but in the blood of humans, other mammals and birds. A mosquito can suck up to three microliters of blood per bite. This may sound like a little but it is more than its own body weight. After wintering in a sheltered spot, the fertilized females lay their eggs – up to 300 ones at a time. The eggs are placed in the water and form a kind of raft together with small air bubbles. Potential breeding sites are lakes, ponds, puddles, but also water ditches, rain barrels or the flowerpot coasters. Wherever there is water, you will also find mosquitoes.

Worldwide, 3,500 species of mosquitoes are known. A few hundred of them also bite us humans. Apart from Antarctica, mosquitoes can be found on every continent. Only in the desert, at the North and South Poles and in the high mountains one is safe from them. Mosquitoes have existed for about 100 million years. So they had a lot of time to take their place in the ecosystem. But why are the little tormentors actually a good thing? True, they serve as food for bats, birds and spiders. However, these animals also eat other insects. Mosquito larvae purify the water as they live on organic waste. Several flowering plants are also pollinated by mosquitoes. Although water purification and pollination are important tasks, the mosquitoes play only a minor role here. Other insects are much more effective.

At the most, mosquitoes make a visible difference in the ecosystem of the Arctic tundra. For the journey of migratory birds, the mosquito swarms provide enough food. In addition, they make the reindeer herds to move on, which keeps the grasslands from being trampled and eaten. However, some researchers have yet another theory about the right of existence of the mosquito. According to them, parasites such as fleas and mosquitoes keep the immune system of the hosts on alert. Without their ”attacks“, the immune system would downgrade. Scientists from the Universities of Bern (Switzerland) and Jyväskylä (Finland) even suspect that mosquitoes are accelerating the evolution of their victims. Mammals that occasionally have to bother with parasites could therefore adapt better to changing living conditions. However, that does not mean that you have to be intentionally bitten.
