Weleda Naturweisheit

:

In 2015, a New Zealander won the French version of the World Scrabble Championship. Only at the award ceremony did it turn out that he didn't speak French at all. The fact that he still managed to beat the native speakers was due to his excellent memory. He had simply memorized a French dictionary and the conjugation of all verbs. However, he did not know the meaning of the words or their correct pronunciation. Very few people can memorize a complete dictionary. Nevertheless, a good memory has less to do with talent than most people think. Because the memory can be trained like a muscle. Theatre actors, for example, learn certain techniques to reproduce long texts on stage without mistakes. In past millennia, memorization was often the only method for the majority of people to store and pass on knowledge.

The people of the Stone Age had no books. They could not look up whether a plant was edible or poisonous. Therefore, experiences had to be passed on orally. Which mnemonic devices were used is not known. In the first advanced civilizations, however, it was already common to write long stories in verse. Rhymes are simply better remembered. Legends, myths and also historical events were therefore often passed down in verse. The singers and bards were the memory of their people. The bards of the Celts and Germanic tribes were particularly famous. It is reported that they could tell or sing through whole nights. They often accompanied their epics and heroic stories with instruments. The epic Beowulf from the 6th century shows how extensive their memory must have been. For the 3,182 verses, a bard needed not only a good memory, but also stamina and strong vocal cords. But the bards did not only use their memory for entertainment. Court rulings, family trees or political contracts were also "stored" in their heads.

The first documentation for posterity was created about 6,000 years ago. However, chiseling characters in stone was arduous work. Moreover, for a long time reading and writing was reserved for priests and high officials. It was not until the Roman Empire that the population became extensively literate. However, long texts on parchment scrolls were still a costly affair. That is why it was customary in many religious communities to learn the sacred texts by heart. In the Orient, the art of memorization is still highly regarded today. People who know the entire Koran by heart are still called "Hāfiz" (preservers).

In addition to religious texts, myths or the heroic deeds of the ancestors, the knowledge of the art of healing was also passed down mouth-to-mouth over many millennia. Although there were already medical books in antiquity, the knowledge of healing plants was often passed on orally, especially in folk medicine. In Central Europe, the so-called "herb women" in particular had an enormous wealth of experience. However, the deep-rooted knowledge of the powers of nature was to be the undoing of the herb women and midwives in the Middle Ages. For several centuries, they were persecuted by the Inquisition and burned at the stake as witches. As a result, a great deal of knowledge was lost.

At the beginning of the 19th century, the first "synthetic" medicines came onto the market. Within a short time, the pharmaceutical industry took over the production of remedies. Herbal medicine and natural healing methods were increasingly seen as old-fashioned. About 100 years ago, however, some people began to question this development. In many places, efforts were made to preserve the ancient knowledge of the healing power of nature. It was at this time that Weleda in Schwäbisch Gmünd began to produce natural healing and body care products. Today, the company has the largest medicinal herb garden in Europe.
