Urtekram Spicy Orange

:

Almost half of all fruit juices consumed worldwide contain the juice of oranges. This is all the more astonishing because 500 years ago oranges were still completely unknown in the western world. Originally from China and Southeast Asia, the orange was created thousands of years ago from a cross between mandarin and grapefruit. Although traders had brought the fruit to the Mediterranean via the Silk Road in ancient times, it was not until the 9th century that it was planted on a large scale in Spain and Sicily. However, these were not sweet oranges (Citrus sinensis), but bitter oranges (Citrus aurantium). This fruit, also known as marmalade orange, is now mainly processed into orange jam and orange peel. Delicately scented neroli oil was extracted from its flowers as early as the Middle Ages. Even today, essential neroli oil is used in many perfumes for the heart note. In addition to its use as a condiment and fragrance, the bitter orange was also used in medicine. In the 13th century, for example, Arab doctors prescribed a cream made of bitter oranges against bloating and bad breath.

Of course, you can also squeeze bitter oranges. However, the bitter juice is rather used to refine sauces, dressings and oriental dishes. We owe the popular sweet orange juice to the Portuguese Vasco da Gama. He was the first European to successfully circumnavigate Africa and reached India by sea. When da Gama went ashore in Mombasa in 1498 to hire a navigator, he also tried the oranges there. These were not only bigger, but also much sweeter than the local oranges. Since the Portuguese were also enthusiastic about the sweet fruit and the orange trees they had brought with them, the orange spread throughout southern Europe within a few years. The Spanish city of Valencia is still considered the European capital of citrus fruits today. When the Spaniards brought the oranges to the ”New World“ in the early 16th century, large orange plantations emerged in Florida and Mexico. Today, however, most sweet oranges are harvested in Brazil.

Oranges are amongst the most popular fruits of Central Europeans. The winter fruit is not only sweet, but also rich in vitamin C. Many people enjoy the fruit pulp of oranges during the cold season and, at the same time, strengthen their immune system. In terms of aromatherapy, orange scent has a positive effect on mood even on gray winter days. In natural cosmetics, extracts of orange peel and orange blossoms provide fruity, fresh scents.
