No river has more water than the Amazon. When the water level is high, it flushes over 300 million liters of water into the Atlantic every second. Only many kilometers from the coast this enormous amount of river water mixes with the salt water of the ocean. But this has not always been the case. During the ice age, sea levels were much lower than today. At that time the Amazon was still pouring over a huge waterfall into the Atlantic. The pull of this waterfall increased the flow rate and the river dug deep canyons into the rock. When the sea level rose again, the canyons filled up and the waterfall became a wide delta. However, the river bed of the Amazon was so deep that ocean-going ships can still travel 3,700 kilometers upstream.
The Amazon is a river of superlatives. It even irrigates regions through which it does not flow. The Amazon exports a large part of its water by air. Climatologists call this phenomenon ”flying rivers“. Huge amounts of water vapor rise into the atmosphere from the Amazon and its tributaries. Streams form there that behave like earthly rivers. They transport the water vapor to distant areas of South America, form rain clouds and irrigate the local flora. The Amazon also influences the weather in another way: due to the uniform evaporation there are no collisions of cold-dry and warm-humid air in the atmosphere. That is why no tropical cyclones can form over the primeval forests of the Amazon.
The rainforest of the Amazon basin is the largest contiguous tropical forest with an area of over 5.5 million square kilometers. Many researchers also refer to it as the ”green lung of the planet“. In the dense shade of its trees, a unique ecosystem has developed over millions of years. And although the rainforest has been explored for centuries, it has by no means revealed all of its secrets. In 2014 and 2015 alone, 381 new animal and plant species were discovered. The Amazon rainforest is a real treasure of nature. Some active ingredients from Amazon plants have also become indispensable in natural cosmetics. The Xingu care line from SantaVerde even bears such a place in its name. The rainforest along the rivers of the Rio Xingu offers a lush, bursting, vital flora for exceptionally powerful care products. The synergetic interplay of the natural active ingredients firms the skin and provides a vitalising feeling on the skin and a fresh complexion.
