Salus Organic Teas Power of Nature

:

The Mediterranean is one of the oldest cultural regions in the world. It is the cradle of the great civilizations of antiquity. Grains, fruits and vegetables have been grown in the sun-drenched countries for thousands of years. The special climate also allows many herbs and medicinal plants to spring from the soil. In the often sparse Mediterranean landscape, the colourful cistus is obvious. The undemanding, slightly more than hip-high shrubs with the purple to dark pink coloured petals grow almost everywhere. The Cretan Cistus (Cistus creticus) has been appreciated as a versatile medicinal plant since antiquity. It owes its name to the island of Crete, where the cistus was already endemic in the 4th century BC.

The cistus even comes up in Greek mythology. According to the legend, the gods bitterly argued about the task of the plant. According to the will of godfather Zeus, the cistus should help heal wounded warriors. His wife Hera, as well as Demeter, Aphrodite and many other goddesses, wanted to know none of this. In their opinion, the plant with the magnificent flowers should be used for beauty care. Because Zeus did not want to argue with the entire female population of Olympus, he finally made a compromise. From then on, the cistus was able to promote healing as well as beauty.

In the summer sun, the leaves and branches of the cistus begin to secrete an oily resin called labdanum. The doctors of antiquity used it for disinfecting bandages or for dental care. Labdanum was also one of the favourite perfumes of Cretan women. With the emergence of modern medicine, however, many applications of the cistus were forgotten. In the eastern Mediterranean, however, it remained an established home remedy. Since the end of the 1990s, the cistus has celebrated its comeback. Especially the tea of a special cistus plant, the Cistus incanus, is becoming increasingly popular. Due to its valuable ingredients, the cistus tea develops a particularly beneficial effect, especially in the cold season.
