Primavera Forest Scents
The Amazon rainforest is the largest tropical forest on our planet. Its area of over six million square kilometers extends over nine different countries. Even more impressive than its size, however, is its gigantic biological richness. Nowhere else in the world exist as many different animal and plant species. The rainforest of the Amazon Basin is incredibly densely overgrown. There are more tree species on many single hectares than throughout North America. That is also the reason for the breathtaking diversity of the local wildlife. In the rainforest, many animals have become so specialized that they only eat one particular plant. Preferably, of course, one that is spurned by other animals. Over the millennia, many new subspecies developed this way. For example, there are birds that look relatively similar, but eat completely different fruits or nest in different tree species.
Low temperature fluctuations, high humidity and countless edible plants offer many animals optimal living conditions. Humans reach their limits very quickly in the rainforest, though. Humans have been living in the Amazon rainforest only for about 11,000 years. Usually, they lived in small tribes of hunters and gatherers. In the 16th century, however, Spanish conquistadors also reported real cities in the jungle. For a long time these reports were dismissed as fiction. In 2003, researchers from the University of Florida discovered the remains of a large settlement in the Amazon rainforest. In addition to artificially created field and garden areas, they also found remains of streets, squares and even bridges. It is quite possible that traces of hitherto unknown cultures can still be discovered in the Amazon region. The ability of the rainforest to swallow entire cities has, in any case, always inspired the imagination of mankind. In Central America or Southeast Asia, at least, entire metropolises vanished in the jungle. Researchers are still wondering today why the Maya have completely abandoned their cities. Their massive pyramids and extensive temples were completely overgrown by jungle plants. The ruins were so overgrown that they remained undiscovered for centuries.
The rainforests of our planet are mysterious places. But is rainforest, virgin forest and jungle the same thing? Not quite. Rainforests are forest areas with humid climate and extensive rainfall. They exist in tropical, subtropical and even temperate climate zones such as in the north of California or in New Zealand. The tropical rainforests are located in the humid and warm climate on both sides of the equator. In India and Southeast Asia, the rainforest is usually called ”jungle“. The name is derived from the Indian word for wilderness (”Jangal“). A forest area that has remained untouched by humans is called virgin forest or primary forest. The virgin forests of Europe lie mostly in the north of the Russian taiga. Only just under 1% are forest areas in Central Europe.
Latest at the time of Romanticism towards the end of the 18th century, it was also discovered as a place of muse. During a woodland walk, poets and writers found new inspiration. Their impressions while standing under mighty oak trees or dense pines flowed into countless novels, songs, poems and fairy tales. Even in the second half of the 20th century hiking was considered to be a sport for pensioners. Meanwhile, hiking has regained its place as the most popular outdoor activity. No wonder, because in the shade of the trees the stress of everyday life falls off a little faster. If you do not want to wait until the next forest walk, you can also bring the soothing scent of the trees into your home. To improve the indoor climate, Primavera offers essential oils of very special trees.
