What is the primary matter of this world? This question bothered many philosophers in ancient Greece. Thales of Millet was convinced that it should be water. According to his theory the flat world floated in a vast ancient sea. Not all of his contemporaries shared his opinion. Anaximenes, who also lived in Millet, believed that the primary matter should be air. And Heraclitus, undoubtedly the most famous one of the three, was convinced that he found the primary matter in fire. He reasoned his thesis with the fact that fire constantly changes, just as the universe continually alters. Apparently earth was too trivial to be the primary matter to the philosophers. Admittedly, compared to the other elements the dusty ground of Greece was not really impressive. But in the eastern part of the Greek speaking world one had a different opinion. There, whole cities were build with earth, or more precisely with loam. This particular soil consists of a mixture of sand, silt and clay.

From loam bricks could be burned for house construction. However, more widespread was the so-called beaten cobwork. Here, the moist loam was poured into a pressure resistant formwork and tamped down from above. This process was continued until the wall reached the desired height. With loam one could build much faster an cheaper than with carved stones. How impressive the buildings made of loam were, can still be seen for example at the Fort of Aït-Ben-Haddou in Morocco or the Great Mosque of Djenné in Mali. Unlike stone or concrete loam is hygroscopic. That means it takes in (atmospheric) humidity and also releases it. Especially in extremely hot regions loam walls have been providing for a pleasant indoor climate for millennia. Perhaps the loam construction sites at the Nile or the Niger were also the reason that yet another possible application of the construction material was discovered. The mud of loam-rich soil has namely a noticeably positive effect on the skin. It binds fat, pimples and blackheads in the skin and pulls them out of the pores during the drying process. Thus the cleansing effect of healing earth was discovered thousands of years ago. It is considered to be one of the oldest natural remedies of mankind. In ancient Egypt it was used to relieve inflammation and rheumatic complaints. Later Greek doctors began to sieve clay finely and prescribe it also for internal applications.

Of course, not every earth is a healing earth. When talking about healing earth usually a powder that is won from a particular clay type is meant. For the internal use of the term ”healing earth“ meanwhile an approval as medical product is necessary in the Western world. In ancient times, this was still less problematic. On the island Lemnos the valuable clay was excavated, washed and pressed in a round form. Before drying, these ”tablets“ were also stamped with a seal. Healing earth was therefore also known as seal earth and was very expensive. Today healing earth is much more affordable and is used more and more often again for skin care. Especially for people with extremely sensitive skin, clay is a valuable alternative, because it does not nearly irritate the skin as much as many soaps or shampoos.
