Luvos Healing Earth Masks
Greece has 3,054 islands. The largest are Crete, Euboea and Lesbos. There are however also many small rocky islands that were never inhabited. In total, Greece governs over 80% of all islands in the Mediterranean Sea. Most of them are located in the Aegean Sea, a sea between the Greek mainland and Turkey. Even in ancient times there were numerous merchant ships on the way, which supplied the islands with grain and wine. On the way back they took gold and silver, which was exploited in the mines of the islands. For the transport, the builders of the ancient Greeks had developed barges with a rectangular sail and a spacious hull. This meant that large loads could be moved, but those ships were not particularly fast and manoeuvrable. As long as one was in the vicinity of the coast, the inertia of the boat hardly played a role. On the open sea, however, the matter looked quite different. When a storm broke loose, the crew often had to throw the cargo overboard to reduce the ship's draft. However, when the waves were too high this didn’t help either. Despite sacrifices for Poseidon, thousands of ships ended up on the bottom of the sea. For this reason the Aegean Sea is today a popular destination for treasure hunters. With modern equipment, they search for wrecks from the ancient world on the seabed, always in the hope of finding a gold treasure.
From most of the wrecks, however, the divers only retrieve old amphorae. Since every now and then a crock of coins is actually found, the search goes on, because the next time you could come across the sunken treasure of a long forgotten island king. Not everything that the divers fetch from the depth looks valuable at first sight. The best example is well-closed vessels with stamped clay-thalers. If you seek for gold, you probably do not know what to do with them. 2,500 years ago, however, the finder of such a box with clay would have been set for life. The talk is about ”bole“. Under this name the healing earth was traded, which was quarried on the island of Lemnos. It was pressed into the shape of tablets, accurately weighed and minted with a seal to confirm their authenticity. For in ancient Greece healing earth was in some cases more expensive than gold.
Healing earth is probably the oldest known natural remedy at all. Already the ancient Egyptians treated inflammation and rheumatic complaints with Nile mud. In ancient Greece, clay was finely sieved by the physicians and then prescribed for internal application. Healing earth was used especially for complaints in the stomach and digestive tract. But what makes earth to healing earth? Today ”healing earth“ is generally understood as a powder, which is obtained from a certain mineral-containing loess, loam, clay or moor mud. In order to be able to use the term ”healing earth“ today, an approval as medical product is required in the western world. For external application, e.g. as a natural peeling one therefore often simply speaks of mineral earth. The old Greeks did not worry about this terminology. Above all, the effect was important to them. In addition to the medical application, it was also a popular care product for wealthy citizens. And even today, healing and mineral earth are an important ingredient in selected natural cosmetics. Just like the facial masks of Luvos.
