:

In Germany, grapefruits are often referred to as pomelos. But these are two completely different fruits. The pomelo is native to Southeast Asia and is probably the oldest known citrus fruit. It lives up to its Latin name ”Citrus maxima“ (largest lemon), because some specimens weigh more than 2 kilos. In Europe and North America, people tend to prefer the grapefruit. The grapefruit is not only smaller than the pomelo, it is also much younger. It was only discovered around 1750 on the Caribbean island of Barbados. There it developed from a natural crossing of orange (Citrus sinensis) and pomelo (Citrus maxima). The newly discovered fruit was given the Latin name ”Citrus paradisi“. In popular parlance, however, it was also called ”forbidden fruit“ or ”paradise apple“. In the end, ”grapefruit“ was the most popular name. It alludes to the fact that the fruits hang in clusters like grapes on a tree.

The grapefruit is smaller than the pomelo and has a thinner skin. In addition, it tastes more intense and a bit bitter. Different varieties of grapefruit have been grown over the centuries. Depending on the variety, the colour of the fruit pulp varies between light yellow and deep red. In the beginning, grapefruits were mainly planted as exotic ornamental plants. Commercial cultivation only began in the second half of the 19th century. Most of the plantations originated in the USA, where almost 60% of the grapefruits harvested worldwide are grown today. However, the real triumph of the grapefruit only began after the stock market crash in 1929. During the economic crisis, many American families were dependent on government support in the form of food stamps. In addition to bread, flour, beans and other staple foods, food stamps for citrus fruits were also issued. This was the first time many families came into contact with the grapefruit.

In the late 1930s, the grapefruit had already established itself as a breakfast fruit. For many Americans today, half a grapefruit is a ”must-have“ for every large breakfast. The grapefruit owes its success at the breakfast table to its fresh taste and high vitamin content. And that also makes them a good basis for vegan dietary supplements.
