Farfalla Organic Hydrosol

:

Essential oils often play an important role in the production of high-quality natural cosmetics. In most care products, they provide the pleasant fragrance and the distinctive character of creams, lotions or shampoos. In contrast to the other sensory impressions, scents are directly absorbed by the brain. For this reason, our subconscious mindset is also directly addressed by scents. This can happen even if we do not consciously perceive a smell. Even the smallest quantities of certain fragrances can affect our mood. The aroma of pine, silver fir, lemongrass or lemon, for example, is perceived by many people as refreshing. The subtle scent of carnations or roses, on the other hand, creates a sensual atmosphere. Already in the ancient Near East people discovered the soothing effects of fragrant plants and aromatic incense on one's mind. Until the use of essential oils, as we know them today, however, a lot of time passed.

For nearly a thousand years, essential oils have been professionally distilled. The necessary distillation process is probably even older. As early as in the 10th century, Persian doctors used a procedure which has hardly changed since then. First, a glass vessel is filled with water and plants. The water is brought to a boil and steam rises. The steam dissolves oil droplets and water-soluble active ingredients from the plant and is then passed into a tube as it rises. There, it cools down, liquefies again and runs into a vessel with two outlet taps. The upper tap is for the oil, the lower one for an extremely interesting by-product: The hydrosol. In the 17th century, this plant water was partially more popular in Europe than the essential oil itself. Above all, the nobility had a weakness for the fragrant waters. During the festive celebrations in the residences and palace gardens many guests carried small bottles of plant water. When it was particularly hot, face, arms, and décolleté were sprinkled with a little hydrosol for a cooling effect. Afterwards you either went back on the dance floor or shared a private room with your dance partner..

Hydrosol, however, was not only used by the nobility. Its cooling effect also provided some relief for bedridden patients. In addition, the scents were used to dispel unpleasant odors in hospitals. In the palace kitchens, exquisite dishes were refined with hydrosols. Also for flavouring pralines and marzipan, confectioners like to add a hint of rose water. In the 19th and 20th century, on the other hand, hydrosols were largely out of fashion. They were rather replaced by intense perfumes at that time. Today, the plant waters slowly awake from their deep sleep. They can also play a supporting role in aromatherapy. Many people perceive the fragrance of many plant waters to be even more pleasant than that of the essential oil. At home, hydrosols are used as natural facial toners or aftershave lotions but also as refreshing body sprays. However, not every plant water is also a hydrosol. Distilled water which has been ”mixed“ with a few drops of essential oil can also be sold under the name of plant water or flower water. Hydrosols are always the result of a distillation, though. Particularly high-quality hydrosols are often enriched by several distillation processes. Each hydrosol is therefore a plant water but not the other way around.
