Eubiona Rosemary Care Series

:

More and more people work out regularly at the gym. And also in the fresh air many people exercise. Jogging, Nordic walking and cycling are especially popular. For many people sport is a good way to clear one’s head and re-energize after a long working day. But human beings have not always been sports-mad. The patriarchs of the old Orient would have never dreamt of running a race. And anyone who had achieved some prosperity tried to avoid physical effort as much as possible. In ancient Greece however, there was a counter-trend. In the Hellenic city states young athletes were sweating in the gymnasium to compete against the champions of other regions later on. The biggest event of this kind has been the Olympic Games, which were held every four years in the grove at Olympia.

Legend has it that the games were introduced by the demigod Heracles in honor of his father Zeus. In ancient times, the Olympic Games were the most important sporting event and were held over several consecutive days. Running, wrestling, horse races and chariot races were just some of the disciplines on the Olymp. To gain Zeus’ goodwill, the athletes made big efforts. In addition, the games also had political significance. After the Persian wars they should peacefully bring together the estranged Greek states. The highlight of the celebrations was the classic pentathlon. And the prize packed a punch: The winner had to no longer pay taxes for the rest of his life! During competition all athletes were naked. Women were neither approved as participants nor as spectators. Today when we think of the term athlete we picture a sportsman with a well-trained body. But translated from the Greek, the word rather means competitor. This feature still applies to many athletes. Nevertheless the original meaning of the competitor was transferred later on to toned, muscular people.

After the physical efforts the athletes of Olympia could relax in the public baths. There the extensive knowledge about herbs of their time was of benefit to them. Thousands of years ago, people were already aware of the stimulating scent of rosemary twigs and their refreshing effect on body and mind. Soreness could effectively be alleviated by cool rosemary inunctions. Also myrtle was highly valued. The essential oils of the evergreen shrub had a clarifying and balancing effect.

The Olympic Games are still held every four years. Today, women also compete for the coveted medals. The athletes now come not only from Greece, but from all over the world. And nobody competes naked any more. But it's not just the games that have made it into the present day - the skin care herbs are also increasingly being used again.
