In the long corridors of ancient castles you can trace back the portraits of aristocratic ancestors for centuries. When looking at the large oil paintings it often strikes that many men look alike on those images. In the 16th and 17th century apparently every man of distinction, wore shoulder length curly hair with a middle parting. However, the flowing magnificent head of curls was not a gift of nature but a wig. The most expensive exemplars were made of human hair while the variants made of animal hair were much cheaper. In the Baroque era the wardrobe of the nobility became more and more extravagant. Precious materials and elaborately embroidered cloaks should underline the status. And even regarding the length and the volume of wigs one was trying to outdo the other courtiers when possible. But there was also a clear limit: One always had to be careful to not appear fancier than the King. There are portraits of Louis XIV on which his black curly wig takes up more than a third of the image. While men still focused on more and more voluminous hairstyles, the hair fashion of the ladies remained relatively simple.

The founder of the wig trend is believed to be the French King Louis XIII. In his day long hair among men were a sign of power and dignity. Unfortunately, the monarch already lost most of his hair as a young man. In contrast to most of his subjects he could afford an artificial replacement. Because the king then dictated the fashion, the other nobles copied his artificial curls. Another advantage of the wig was that it kept the head nicely warm in the winter, for the palaces of the rural nobility could hardly be heated up. In the 18th century wigs were additionally powdered white. To date, white wigs are worn in some countries by judges or senior officials. And also in the House of Lords, they are still in use today. After the heads of the aristocrats rolled during the French Revolution, the era of wigs was over. From now on men wore real hairstyles again. Especially in the army uniform hairstyles were introduced. Most popular was medium long hair, which was braided to the so-called soldier pigtail. In Prussia this was compulsory up to the early 19th century, then again ”the old braids were cut off“. The short haircut found its way into the military and also in civilian life men no longer wore their hair quite as long.

In the middle of the 19th century hygiene made a giant leap forward. From now on, even ordinary citizens could afford care products. Because they were finally able to care their hair, more and more women renounced hoods and similar headgear. Beautiful hair could also be dressed well. The lords of creation used the new hair care products – primarily in the Empire – also for beard care. Even nearly 100 years ago, many people were satisfied with one hair wash a week. Nowadays, most people wash their hair much more frequently, sometimes even daily. In order to not irritate hair and scalp unnecessarily, it is worth paying attention to natural ingredients as much as possible when selecting a shampoo.
