The best part about laundry is that it is done almost as if by magic. Thanks to the washing machine! Clean laundry is important for our well-being. Jumping into a freshly made bed, putting on the favorite sweater or impressing in a bright white shirt at festive occasions. Nice that we nowadays can enjoy this convenience and still have time for ourselves. While the laundry rotates in the machine we can comfortably drink a cup of coffee, watch the favorite TV show, read a book or spend time with the partner...
As recently as hundred years ago bright white shirts were status symbols. Washing clothes was hard work. Only very few people could afford to put on a clean shirt every day. For this reason most garments were kept in rather dark colors. Because of the high expenditure of time most families had their big laundry day one time per month at a maximum. And it was quite an effort: sufficient firewood had to be collected already the day before. The laundry, sorted by colors, was soaked overnight. Then it was time to get up early in order to light a fire under the wash cauldron. While the water was heated slowly, the soaked laundry was wrung out and stains were soaped. Then the preheated laundry was put into the boiling water in the cauldron together with washing powder. With a large wooden spoon, the laundry had to be churned and pushed deep down into the boiling water again and again. After the clothes were cooked, they were pulled out of the water again, got rubbed on the washboard vigorously and after that got washed out again in the wash tub. This process was repeated with fresh water until no more soap was left in the clothes.
Fortunately, in 1951 the first fully automatic washing machine was launched in Germany. Since then it has been possible to have a clean sheet at the press of a button! Back then the laundry could be cleaned faster, but after drying it was shard and scratchy. This changed with one invention of the 60s: the fabric conditioner. From that point on freshly washed laundry felt as good as it looked. Garments only make a good impression if they are clean, soft and if they smell pleasantly. And fortunately more and more people care about our nature not being polluted. In the end Mother Nature should not suffer due to our need for cleanliness.
