Dudu Osun Black Soap

:

Which care products do you have in your bathroom? Shampoo, shower gel, hand soap and toothpaste definitely belong to the basic equipment. They are often accompanied by conditioners, serums, skin creams, peelings, shaving foam, lotions and body oils. The skin care today is planned down to the last detail and adjusted to the individual needs. For almost everything there are special care products. Most people enjoy this diversity, but there are also people who prefer to keep it simple. They would prefer to have only one soap for hands, feet, body, hair and face. And there is actually such a product: The ”black soap“. In the Western world, it finds more and more enthusiastic users every year. However, this is not a new natural cosmetics trend. On the contrary, since in West Africa the black soap has been a product of everyday use for centuries. In Benin, Ghana, Nigeria and Togo it is known as ”ose dudu“ (ose = soap, dudu = black). When and where the black soap was invented is unrecorded. To this day, the recipes of the soaps differ from region to region. However, basically the traditional black soaps are quite similar. Usually, they consist of water, ash and palm or coconut oil or shea butter.

The traditional production of the black soap is very elaborate. First, palm leaves and plantain peels must be dried in the sun. Then they are put into a clay oven until only ashes are left. This ash later gives the soap its typical dark colour. First, it is mixed with water and then filtered afterwards. Meanwhile, the other ingredients such as palm oil or shea butter are heated and then mixed with the filtered ash. Afterwards the mixture is stirred for a whole day. When the soap solidifies, it rises to the surface and can be skimmed off. Finally, it is put into a mould in which it cures for just two weeks. The production of the black soap is based exclusively on purely natural processes. Unlike many factory-made care products, there is no need for chemical agents to transform ashes and oil into a solid soap.

In Africa, black soap is used for the entire body care: First of all, of course, to wash one’s hands and for the use in the shower. Both men and women also use it to wash their hair. Because black soap foams properly, it is also used by West African men as shaving foam. Over here particularly people with greasy and impure skin favour the African soap. Because of the ash contained it cleans particularly deeply and thoroughly. This results in a very pleasant skin feeling after cleansing.
