The dog is not only the best, but also the oldest friend of humans. It accompanied our ancestors already in the Stone Age on their hunting trips. It is not self-evident that dogs are among the most popular pets today. Because with its ancestor, the wolf, the Stone Age people were still at war. Both fought about the same hunting grounds. And encounters with wolf packs were life-threatening for individual hunters. Nevertheless, man and wolf came closer together at some point. Some researchers date back this point of time to more than 100,000 years ago. Some theories assume that orphaned wolf pups were raised by humans then, others suspect that wolves were captured and trained deliberately to catch mammoths and red deer.
In the case of many dog breeds, the relationship to the wolf is still clearly visible today. Huskies, German Shepherds, Greenland Dogs or the Shiba Inu look very similar to their progenitor. The similarity sometimes is so great, that they are mistaken for wolves by walkers at dawn. In addition, there are also dogs whose family tree is no longer recognizable. The Chihuahua, for example, can only reach a shoulder height of 22 cm and can weigh a maximum of 3 kg. However, the Chihuahua is just as much a member of the wolves family as the Mastiff with a shoulder height of 90 cm and a weight of 100 kg.
The definition of uniform dog breeds is particularly difficult. There are estimates of around 800 different dog breeds worldwide. A standardized and generally accepted approach is only available in individual segments so far. Responsible for this are cynological associations. Cynology is the study of breeds, breedings and diseases of domestic dogs. The largest umbrella organization for cynology is the Fédération Cynologique Internationale, in short FCI. According to their principles, there are nearly 350 officially recognized breeds. This number often leads to discussions among dog lovers. For example, Elo, Harzer Fuchs or Old German Shepherd Dog are not recognized by the FCI as independent dog breeds. Other scientists even assume that there are at most 100 different dog breeds. They justify this estimate with the fact that many dogs just do not differ enough from other breeds to be run as a very own breed. This is supported by the fact that many dog breeds look so similar that, at first sight, no difference can be seen between them. The Blond Hovawart and the Golden Retriever, for example, are hard to distinguish for laymen.
Dogs have been bred for certain tasks for ages. Originally used as a companion for hunting, the characteristics and intelligence of certain races predestined them for sheep herding. When the people settled down, dogs guarded the house and yard. Today, most four-legged friends have a permanent place as full family members. Because dogs have been living closely with humans for millennia, they understand us better than any other animals. Dogs can interpret human facial expressions, gestures and moods even better than our closest relatives, the apes. Of course, not every dog goes through the long training as a therapy, rescue or guard dog. Nevertheless, almost all dogs can learn commands such as ”Sit“, ”Down“ or ”Drop“ relatively fast. The commands ”Fetch“ or ”Heel“, on the other hand, require a bit more time and patience. Anyone who incorporates the playfulness of the dog into training as well as praises and rewards the dog correctly can teach his four-legged friend many impressive skills.
