:

Where does the German phrase „etwas durch die Blume sagen“ (English: „to say something through the flower“, which means to say something in a roundabout way) come from? It is the capability to criticize someone, considerately and without hurting the other. The flowery metaphor has been used in Germany for at least 300 years. It originated from the so-called language of flowers, which is yet much older. Even in ancient times one said it with plants. With vine leaves in the hair one showed passion, bay leaves stood for glory and roses for love. From these beginnings an own form of communication evolved in the Orient, Selam - the language of flowers. For Oriental harems the contact to the outer world was largely prohibited. In those harems the art to express oneself with plants was perfected to the last detail.

Because of Lady Wortley Montagu, the wife of the British Ambassador in Ottoman Empire, the language of flowers also became known in Europe. As a woman she received permission to enter the sultan's harem. There she was introduced to the secret language „Selam“. In her letters to England she described the lack of contact of the women of the harem and their coded messages in form of flowers. Lady Montagus letters had the fingers on the pulse, because in the 18th century the Orient was very much en vogue among the European aristocracy. Anyone who fancied themselves decorated their bath with oriental mosaics, drank tea or Turkish coffee and hung up images with designs from the Orient in the salon. And also the language of flowers quickly came into vogue. Especially the ladies at large royal courts were thrilled to exchange secret messages and love confessions in this way. Especially in the scheming princely houses one had to be very careful what one said, to not fall out of favor. Therefore, the flowery secret language was just right for the courtiers. Thus a complex code evolved that you had to learn like a foreign language. Because everything could be interpreted into a bouquet. Which colors had the flowers? Did the flowers have thorns or not? Were the peducles tied together with a ribbon?

Most importantly, of course, was the choice of flowers or herbs. With lilac for example one asked „Will you be faithful to me?“. Who expected his mistress at a place known by her, sent her a gladiolus. Violets were a vote of confidence and with tulips one praised the beautiful eyes of one’s beloved. Yellow daffodils on the other hand should confront the recipient with his vanity. With Asters doubts about the loyalty of the partner were expressed and flowers in a basket meant a clear rejection to the worshipers. It became especially complicated when it came to the rose. The „Queen of Flowers“ had a lot of different meanings. Red roses were a symbol for beauty, passion and love already in ancient times. Up until today love confessions are often accompanied with a large bouquet of red roses. When combining and arranging roses one had to be very careful. With a spray of red and white roses unity and warmth were expressed. But if one took only one rose, the red and white combination stood for war. Meanwhile one stretches the language of flowers and most people are happy about a lovely bunch of roses - no matter what color they have. Roses are not only beautiful to look at, they have also been used for thousands of years for beauty care. Back in ancient times, the precious rose oil was used in fragrances, creams and ointments.
