Eight out of ten Germans plan a large spring-cleaning every year. Tidying up and decluttering is not only good for the apartment, it also liberates the soul. When the sun shines beautifully outside, it should also be tidy and clean inside. But why is there no autumn cleaning? Up until the late 19th century, wood was used for cooking and heating in most houses. And that left fine traces of soot, especially in the winter months. In spring, the walls, floors and especially the furniture had to be scrubbed thoroughly. And because the big cleaning routine had to be repeated every year, people started to call it spring-cleaning.
Even though there is no longer any discussion about the fact that men and women should share the housework, spring-cleaning is usually initiated by women. In general, women clean almost three times as much as men. The fact that men spend so little time wiping and vacuuming seems to be a cross-cultural phenomenon. Even in Sweden, a model country for equal rights, men are seen as slackers when it comes to cleaning. However, it is a common misconception that men are almost blind when it comes to cleanliness. Supposedly, women simply see dust and dirt faster than men and grab a cleaning cloth earlier.
An experiment published in May 2019 by three female scientists from the United States and Australia disproves this thesis. Two photos of an apartment were presented to 327 men and 295 women of different ages. The first photo showed the room tidy, the second photo showed a chaotic room. The test subjects then had to determine the degree of cleanliness and decide how urgently the room should be cleaned. There was no gender difference when evaluating the results. The men had noticed the dirt just like the women.
In the second part of the experiment, the participants were informed that the rooms would belong to either a man or a woman. Regardless of the gender of the evaluators, the results suddenly differed widely. If the tidy room belonged to a man, there was nothing wrong with it. However, if the same room belonged to a woman, the participants set much stricter standards. Neat was no longer good enough, it had to be sparkling clean.
So can men just sit back and relax? Quite the reverse! The evaluation of the second, untidy picture went in a completely different direction. If the untidy room belonged to a man, he was considered lazy and unreliable. Such a weakness of character is considered an absolute exclusion criteria on the American dating market. In contrast, the participants hardly drew any negative conclusions about the character of the female residents.
