Bergland Tea Tree Natural Cosmetics
The east and southeast of Australia is home to a remarkable medicinal plant. Only here, on the weathered granite soils near the coast, the Australian tea tree (Melaleuca alternifolia) is growing. Other than the name suggests, this tree has nothing to do with tea. Responsible for its name is the British sailor James Cook. On his first South Pacific voyage from 1768 to 1771 Cook also landed on the east coast of Australia, which was then called New Holland. Since urgent maintenance work had to be done on the ship, the expedition remained anchored for almost 7 weeks. Cook's crew included botanist Joseph Banks and draftsman Daniel Solander. They used the time to get to know the native flora. The two researchers discovered so many new plants that the bay later got the name ”Botany Bay“. On their hikes they also noticed a tree with thin, pointed leaves and a reddish brown paper-like bark. When Banks put the leaves in boiling water, he got a spicy-aromatic infusion. Captain Cook enjoyed the infusion so much that he offered it to the whole team. The spicy hot drink should help them to recover better from the hardships of the long sea voyage. And since the preparation of the leaves was reminiscent of tea, the newly discovered tree got the name: tea tree.
The Aborigines, however, did not use the tree to make tea. They rather crushed the leaves to treat wounds with their extracts. Only in 1925 did scientists succeed in distilling essential tea tree oil. Tea tree oil has quickly become the standard antiseptic in Australia because of its efficiency in controlling bacteria. The first aid kit of the Australian Army included a bottle of tea tree oil for wound care. In the second half of the 20th century it was replaced almost everywhere by penicillin and antibiotics and almost fell into oblivion. For quite a while now it has been experiencing a renaissance, though. Tea tree oil is also a versatile ingredient in natural cosmetics.
