A young queen bee is able to lay up to 2,000 eggs a day. Accomplishing this huge workload is not self-evident. The foundation for this is the unique nutrition from a combination of bee pollen, honeydew and nectar - the royal jelly. Only the diet of royal jelly turns an ordinary bee larva into a queen. She is then fed all her live with it which makes her live almost 50 times as long as her subjects. If the workers feel that the old queen emits less pheromones they begin to feed a new larva with royal jelly to raise a new heiress to the throne. Besides actively enlarging her state, of course, the queen bee also has to govern it. That is not done by laws but with pheromones. With her mandibles she secretes the so-called ”queen substance“. It contains a messenger substance which inhibits the workers in their sexuality and simultaneously ensures that they continue to enjoy working. Even if it looks different from the outside, inside the hive, each bee performs its given task.

In a beehive there are up to 50,000 bees living in the tightest space. The temperature inside the hive is constantly at 35°C. Despite the high temperature, the honeybees have a very hygienic workplace. Already 50 years ago, this phenomenon was researched by French scientists. They discovered that a hive is almost as sterile as an operating room. The reason of that is propolis - also known as bee glue or hive dross. The bees use this material made of tree resin, wax, pollen and essential oils to seal cracks and openings in their housing. Thus the hive is protected against draught and moisture, but also against intruders. The inside of the beehive is coated with antibiotic propolis as well. Thus bacteria, fungi or microorganisms have no chance to spread. The ancient Greeks were very impressed with the good organization of the bee colonies as well as their honeycomb structured buildings. They called them: Polis (city). Propolis can thus be translated as ”suburb“. In fact, the entrance of a beehive is a front building made of bee glue. It is just like a doormat for honeybees. Each bee comes into contact with it when they return to the hive. Germs, with which they had possibly been in contact during collecting nectar, stay in the entry area due to it.

Humans have been keeping honeybees for thousands of years because of the sweet honey. However, it was not long before people discovered the benefits of the bee glue. In order to get it, the beekeeper simply had to place a fine grid in the beehive. The bees then immediately began to fill the holes with propolis. The ancient Egyptians used a mixture of oils, tree resins and propolis to embalm their pharaohs. The Egyptians may have recognized its germ-reducing effect as early as 3,000 years ago. From ancient Roman times to the late 19th century, propolis was used to disinfect wounds because of its antiseptic properties. It was only due to modern synthetic drugs that propolis almost fell into oblivion. Today it is experiencing a renaissance in natural cosmetics.
