ANNEMARIE BÖRLIND ZZ SENSITIVE

:

We owe the underfloor heating, cobbled streets and the sewage system to the ancient Romans. Many of the aqueducts, roads and bridges built by the Romans are still preserved until today. The Romans were not only great engineers, they also had the most leisure activities in antiquity. The Roman middle and upper classes paid great attention to a balanced work-life balance. Most of the working life took place in the morning. In the cool morning hours, people devoted themselves to ”negotium“ (Latin: activity, business). Once they had completed their duties, the time of leisure (“otium”) began in the early afternoon. According to the classic Greek ideal, this time should be used for art, philosophy, studies and other character-building activities. In reality, many Romans started their “otium” by going to the thermal baths.

In the public bath houses the motto was: ”mens sana in corpore sano“ (a healthy mind in a healthy body). First you refreshed yourself in the cold water pool, then you swam a few laps or relaxed in the steam sweat bath. Massages and beauty care such as manicures were offered, too. The larger thermal baths were real leisure centers. They had sports fields, gymnastics rooms, snack bars and even libraries. After the fall of the Roman Empire, the bathing culture in Western and Central Europe quickly went downhill. The bath rooms of the Middle Ages with wooden tubs and heated water had very little in common with the splendor of Roman thermal baths. It wasn't until the 19th century that bathhouses in Europe emerged as oases of calm and relaxation. Today, modern thermal baths are popular leisure destinations once again. Because in hot water you can still relax just as well as in the times of the Romans.
