Annemarie Börlind Purifying Care
If the knowledge of the ancient Egyptians still existed today, we would live in a better world. As in Hollywood films, bad guys could be seen from afar. In ancient Egypt, people were certain that pimples and blemishes were caused by lies, curses or evil spirits. For the king of Upper and Lower Egypt this was extremely problematic. Under no circumstances should the impression arise that the pharaoh was dishonest or cursed. After all, he was considered as an intermediary between humans and gods. Nothing was left to chance when it came to the outward appearance. Up to this day, larger-than-life statues with youthful facial features, broad shoulders and a narrow waist show the beauty ideal of the pharaohs. However, the reality was often very different. Not every pharaoh had a handsome figure and many suffered from blemishes. The young Pharaoh Tutankhamun must have had a particularly bad skin, because for his journey to the afterlife, he was given a remedy for acne, along with treasures and provisions.
Already over 3,700 years ago, the Egyptians were concerned with the question of how to treat blemished skin. A chapter on this can already be found in the so-called "Eberian Papyrus", which is the oldest surviving work of ancient Egyptian medicine. In addition to magic formulas, this scroll also contained recipes for making medicines. In the case of blemishes, it was recommended to drive away the responsible evil spirits. If mantras and remedies didn't help, the affected skin areas were coated with honey. The doctors in ancient Rome were quite a step ahead of this. They suspected the cause of skin problems especially in contaminated pores. That is why they prescribed cleaning baths in sulfur-containing water for their patients. People who didn't like the smell of sulfur preferred other ways. According to folk wisdom, you only had to rub over the pimples with a cloth at night. If you saw a shooting star, the pimples would simply fall off. However, this method was not particularly successful. In contrast, the treatment with sulfur was still popular in the Middle Ages. There was a lot of experimentation with dubious medicines in the 17th century. Quite a few of them contained mercury and were so aggressive that they burned the skin.
