The formation of shilajit is an impressive geological and biological process. Over several centuries, plant matter is broken down by microorganisms. This process takes place under the immense pressure of massive rock strata and the extreme temperature fluctuations of the high mountains. The result of this extremely slow fermentation is a resinous, sticky mass. During the hot summer months, the soft resin oozes from crevices in the rock and is harvested by hand with great effort. It holds deep cultural significance, and its name, which derives from Sanskrit, translates as ‘conqueror of the mountains’.
