Urtekram Soft Wild Rose
In many countries, the "Queen of Flowers" is still a symbol of love today. No other flower is more often mentioned in poems than the rose. In the Orient and Occident, the poets were equally inspired by its fragile beauty, but also by its thorny protection. There were already wonderful rose gardens in China over 5000 years ago. We know from Confucius that Beijing's imperial libraries collected numerous writings on the raising and care of roses. In Greek mythology, the goddess of love Aphrodite is born from meerschaum and a white rose bush.
Due to the close connection with Aphrodite, the rose was symbolically associated with beauty, love and passion since antiquity. To this day, a bouquet of red roses is considered a classic token of love. Because of the many romantic associations, rose bushes have adorned palace gardens all over the world for millennia. The flowers that could be admired there in the past epochs were beautiful to look at, but still comparatively simple. About 250 years ago more in-depth knowledge of the structure of the flowers, their sexuality and pollination began to develop. When the tea rose, which bloomed several times, was introduced to Europe from China at the beginning of the 19th century, there was a veritable rose boom, especially in France and England. All types of roses introduced after 1867 are called "modern roses". Today there are over 30,000 different types of roses. Because rose growers are still trying to outdo each other with extravagant cross-breeds and opulent flowers. These highly refined "cultivated roses" are considered divas among the ornamental plants. Because they are extremely sensitive and have to be looked after carefully. In contrast, the wild roses are much tougher. They defy wind and weather, are easy to care for, hardly susceptible to diseases and can get very old.
The oldest living rose bush stands not in an oriental palace garden, but in northern Germany. It grows on the outer wall of Hildesheim Cathedral. According to legend, it was already there in the early 9th century. At that time, Emperor Ludwig the Pious went on one of his extended hunting trips during the winter. In order to pursue a magnificent white stag, he left his entourage behind and rode after it for a long time. However, after a breakneck chase through the snowy forest, the stag escaped. Only now did Ludwig notice that he had lost the valuable cross that he always wore around his neck. When his servants caught up with him, he ordered them to search the forest for it. They combed the whole forest for hours until they suddenly came to a clearing that had completely thawed. There the precious piece of jewellery hung in a bush of wild roses that were in full bloom despite the freezing cold. When the emperor was told about this miraculous site, he decided to have a chapel built next to the rose bush. This chapel was later replaced by Hildesheim Cathedral. The rose bush remained untouched. It survived all the ups and downs of the city, including an air raid. It is not possible to say exactly whether Germany's most famous rose bush is actually 1,200 years old. The oldest official document mentioning it is form 1573, however it was already considered the oldest rose bush in the world at that time.
