Duration of use:
The laxative should only be used for a short time. Longer-term use leads to constipation.
Overdose:
Overdose of the laxative may lead to dehydration with electrolyte disturbances and magnesium intoxication. Therapy must be based on the symptoms.

100 g magnesium sulfate 7 H2O (epsomite).
Additional Information:
For use in adults and children from 6 years of age.
Contraindications:
The laxative must not be used in the case of intestinal obstruction and impaired kidney function. It should not be used in inflammatory gastrointestinal diseases and disorders of water and electrolyte balance.
Harmful effects of this laxative during pregnancy and breast-feeding period are not known.
Interactions with other medicines:
The laxative may form complexes with tetracyclines that are difficult to absorb, so that only an insufficient level of active substance is achieved. Sensitivity to cardiac glycosides may be increased due to increased potassium loss. Potassium loss may be increased with concomitant intake of diuretics.
Side effects:
The use of very high doses or chronic use of this laxative may lead to magnesium intoxication - especially in the case of impaired kidney function - which is characterised by central nervous disorders, muscle weakness, reflex failures, fatigue, partial paralysis, coma and cardiac arrhythmias.
As with other laxatives, prolonged use of this laxative may lead to increased losses of water, potassium and other salts. This may lead to disturbances in heart function and muscle weakness, especially if diuretics and adrenal cortical steroids are taken at the same time.
