Why does my hair feel different at first after switching to natural cosmetics?
When switching from conventional hair care to natural cosmetics, there is often an adjustment period: without silicones, the hair feels different at first. Conventional shampoos and conditioners coat the hair with a silicone film, which makes it smooth and manageable. Natural cosmetics do not contain silicones. In the first few weeks, the hair may therefore feel straw-like or heavier as the old film wears off. This adjustment period usually lasts two to four weeks. A gentle hair mask or a plant-based hair oil applied to the tips can help during this time.
What is the difference between sulphate-free and normal shampoos?
Sulphates such as SLS are strong surfactants that cleanse well but can also strip the hair of moisture. Sulphate-free shampoos use milder sugar-based surfactants and do not lather as much. This does not affect their cleansing power; it just feels a bit unusual. Particularly for coloured, dry or curly hair, mild surfactants are a good choice.
Tip: Wash less, care better
Hair care with natural cosmetic products works best if you don’t wash your hair every day. The scalp regulates its sebum production when it isn’t constantly stripped of oils. Washing your hair two to three times a week is sufficient for most hair types. In between washes, plain water or a brush with natural bristles is enough to distribute the sebum along the length of the hair.
Which natural cosmetics are suitable for curly hair?
Curly hair needs moisture and minimal mechanical stress. Rich, sulphate-free shampoos, moisturising conditioners and leave-in products containing plant-based oils such as avocado or coconut oil are well suited. Many brands offer their own care ranges specifically for curly hair. When drying your hair, use a microfibre cloth instead of a coarse terry towel to prevent frizz.
Do natural cosmetics help with greasy roots and dry ends?
This combination type is common. It makes sense to use separate care products: a mild, clarifying shampoo for the roots and a nourishing treatment just for the lengths and tips. The treatment should not be applied to the scalp. Plant-based oils such as jojoba are similar to the skin’s own sebum and are well tolerated by the roots when used sparingly.
