Do natural deodorants without aluminium really work?
Deodorants without aluminium salts do not prevent sweating; instead, they use antibacterial active ingredients to inhibit odour. This is the key difference compared to antiperspirants. Natural deodorants use bicarbonate of soda, zinc ricinoleate or plant extracts to reduce odour-causing bacteria. Natural perspiration is not restricted in any way. There is often an adjustment period of one to two weeks during which the skin readjusts. For sensitive underarms, bicarbonate-free variants are usually more gentle.
Which natural cosmetics help with very dry skin?
If you have very dry skin, you should look for rich textures with a high proportion of plant-based butters and oils. The nourishing properties of shea butter, cocoa butter, almond oil, coconut oil and evening primrose oil have been known in many cultures for centuries. More important than the individual product is the right timing: when applied to skin that is still slightly damp after a shower, oils lock in moisture more effectively. For very dry skin, pure body oils are often more effective than lotions with a high water content.
Tip: Shower with lukewarm water
As obvious as it sounds: hot water strips the skin of its natural oils and dries it out. Anyone prone to dry skin should avoid showering for too long and should use lukewarm water. Make sure to use mild, soap-free cleansers and moisturising shower oils. After showering, it is advisable to simply dab the skin dry rather than rubbing it. Then apply moisturiser whilst the skin is still slightly damp.
Are natural cosmetics suitable for sensitive skin?
Often yes, but not automatically. Certified natural cosmetics do not contain synthetic fragrances; instead, they often use essential oils as a natural scent. These can also irritate very sensitive skin or skin prone to allergies. In such cases, many brands offer fragrance-free ranges. It’s definitely worth checking the ingredients. Shorter lists are usually the gentler choice.
What does ‘moisturising’ mean in shower products?
Moisturising products contain nourishing oils that replace part of the skin’s natural lipid barrier whilst washing. Traditional soaps and many shower gels strip the skin of its natural oils. Moisturising shower oils counteract this. They cleanse gently by loosening dirt whilst simultaneously nourishing the skin’s barrier. For dry and sensitive skin, they are the gentler option for daily cleansing.
