The Argan Oil - The sweeping Argan tree with its incredible air of charisma rises majestically from the red Moroccan soil. The mere sight of it hinting at the mystique which surrounds it. The argan tree (argania spinosa) is one of the oldest trees in the world, and has been growing wild for millions of years – but only in a small area in south west Morocco. It can tolerate extremely dry conditions and high temperatures. Its fruit has a high oil content and resembles a cross between an olive and a yellow plum. It has an unpleasant taste and is not suitable for human consumption. However, the hard nut inside conceals a treasure of its own, between one and three seeds, from which the precious argan oil, known as "Morocco's Gold" is pressed.

The argan tree is indigenous to the area around the cities of Agadir and Essaouira, a region which is also home to the Amazigh Berber tribes who have many centuries of experience with argan oil. For generations they have passed down wonderful tales of the culinary delights and beneficial effects offered by the argan tree. In 1998, after the efficacy of argan oil had become a focus of scientific research, UNESCO classified the Moroccan argan forest as a biosphere reserve. This offers even greater protection to the unique culture of the Amazigh Berbers which has grown up around the argan tree at the edge of the Sahara desert.
