Beautiful skin can save your life. This is exactly what happened in one of the most famous ancient court cases around 371 BC. A Greek girl named Mnesarete was famous far beyond Athens for her extraordinary beauty. Jealous Athenians called her ”Phryne“ because of her yellowish complexion, which means something like ”toad“. Nevertheless, she became one of the most popular hetaerae of her time. And because her lovers were among the richest men in Athens, she too achieved considerable wealth. Because of her smooth and flawless skin, she posed naked for a sculptor named Praxiteles for the statue ”Aphrodite of Knidos“. The self-confident Phryne was convinced that, optically, she would resemble the goddess of love. With this comparison, however, she fulfilled the sentence of blasphemy and was charged. The trial was not going well at all. When the conviction was imminent, her defense attorney had an idea: He asked Phryne to come forward and ripped off her dress without advance notice. The sight of her bare body is said to have actually reminded the judges of Aphrodite's beauty. Or maybe the men were just impressed by bare skin in general. The consequence was: acquittal.
Smooth, flawless skin already corresponded to the classic beauty ideal in ancient times. The ancient Egyptians used body oils and even body scrubs over 3,500 years ago. For this they used mineral-containing river mud or a mixture of sand and oil. In the case of impurities, the skin was covered with honey. Even back then, opinions differed about the causes of blemished skin. In Egypt, evil spirits were blamed for pimples and acne. For this reason, priests often supported honey treatments with rituals and incantations. For the Greeks and Romans, blemishes did not have any supernatural reasons. They were just an annoying side effect of puberty. Until the late 20th century, blemished skin was primarily considered a teenage problem. Today we know that pimples, blackheads or a large-pored, irregular complexion can also affect adults. Connections with the respective lifestyle and eating habits are subject of current research.
One of the main reasons for blemished skin is increased sebum production. If a sebum is blocked, the sebum builds up back in the skin and a so-called ”blackhead“ is created. If bacteria trigger inflammations in blocked sebum glands, pimples develop. The body defends itself by trying to get rid of the bacteria with pus. By removing the pus, the bacteria are often only moved elsewhere and new impurities occur. Proper care is particularly important to break this cycle. Because frequent washing does not necessarily lead to a better complexion. Too much hot water and soap can damage the protective acid mantle of the skin. Skin prone to impurities therefore needs care that is both clarifying and moisturising.
The care series PurDerm by Dado Sens was specially developed for the needs of blemished skin. Soothing care substances such as alpha-bisabolol and allantoin promote the improvement of the general skin condition. The PurDerm Cleansing Mask, the PurDerm Creamy Cleanser and the PurDerm Intensive Gel remove cornifications, open clogged pores and promote the flow of sebum. While the PurDerm Cleansing Tonic clears impure skin with mild fruit acid and sorbitol, the PurDerm Effect Cream moisturises it. By dabbing affected areas, the PurDerm Anti-Blemish-Roll-On can be used to treat individual pimples and blackheads. The formulations of the care series PurDerm by Dado Sens rely on anti-inflammatory active ingredients to gently fade away impurities and prevent the development of new pimples and blackheads.
