Friends, family members, colleagues and of course the partner can be recognized without a doubt. Or not? You should not be too sure about that. Statistically speaking, every person has at least seven doppelgangers. Meeting one of them is extremely rare among over seven billion people in the world, though. In literature and in films, however, doppelgangers are common. Swapping the identity of two people because they look alike is as popular in thrillers as in comedies.
Sometimes real life is more bizarre than any Hollywood screenplay. No story shows this more clearly than the case of Will West. In 1903 he was sentenced to a short time in prison for a minor offense. He served his sentence in the federal prison of Leavenworth, Kansas. When his body measurements and a photo were archived in the files, the officers made a curious discovery: There was already a prisoner named William West. He was sentenced to life imprisonment two years earlier. And with the new inmate he had more in common than just the name. Not only did William West look exactly like Will West, he also had exactly the same body measurements. In Leavenworth, there were now two inmates that you could not visually distinguish from one another. To avoid confusion, the documents of both Will and William West were supplemented by their fingerprints, almost a quarter of a century before fingerprints were first used in American law enforcement.
As proven by the Yung-Hwui code, the ancient Chinese were at least 1,200 years ahead of the officials in Kansas. In the documents it was stipulated that a divorce certificate, for example, had to be ”signed“ by a fingerprint. At that time, passports, promissory notes or ownership deeds were signed in the Middle Kingdom in this way, The Chinese had already recognized in the 7th century that people could be identified without a doubt with their fingerprints. In Europe, this discovery was only made 1,000 years later. In 1788, the German anatomist Johann Christoph Andreas Mayer came to the conclusion that every fingerprint is unique. Not even identical twins - whose DNA is 99.999% identical - have the same fingerprint.
