Toothpaste with or without fluoride. What’s the difference?
Fluoride is the naturally occurring ionic form of the chemical element fluorine. It is widely found in the form of salts, for example in rock, drinking water, as well as in black and green tea. In dental care, fluoride is regarded as a classic active ingredient for strengthening tooth enamel and promoting remineralisation. However, the recommended daily dosage is not without controversy. Many natural toothpaste brands deliberately avoid fluoride and rely instead on alternatives such as hydroxyapatite. Which approach is suitable in each individual case remains a personal decision and can be discussed with a dental professional if necessary. What is hydroxyapatite in toothpaste?
Hydroxyapatite is a mineral whose composition is similar to that of natural tooth enamel. It is used as an ingredient in fluoride-free natural toothpaste and is chemically distinct from fluoride. Hydroxyapatite is an alternative for those who consciously choose to avoid fluoride.
Tip: Use toothpaste sparingly.
A pea-sized amount is more than enough. Using more toothpaste does not clean any better; it simply produces more foam, which gives a false sense of cleanliness. More important than the amount is brushing for at least three minutes and using the correct technique. With tooth powder, a small amount on a damp toothbrush is also sufficient.
Are natural bamboo toothbrushes hygienic?
Bamboo toothbrushes are a low-plastic alternative to plastic toothbrushes. The handle is made from bamboo, whilst the bristles are often made from nylon or plant-based materials. When it comes to hygiene, the same guidelines apply as for any other toothbrush: store them in a dry, upright position and replace them regularly, roughly every two to three months.
Why do natural toothpastes produce less foam?
Many conventional toothpastes contain the foaming agent SLS. Natural toothpastes usually do without it. The reduced foaming may feel unusual at first. However, the amount of foam is not generally regarded as an indicator of cleaning performance. This is more closely linked to the abrasive particles, the duration of brushing and the brushing technique. After a short time, many users get used to the different sensation when brushing.
