Savon du Midi Cinnamon-Orange Karité-Soap with the pleasant scent of cinnamon and oranges. The soaps of Savon du Midi are made in French Provence. After saponification, shea butter and – depending on model – honey, perfume or essential oil is added for final blending. Soaps of Savon du Midi are produced in small soap manufactures in the tradition of Marseilles’ plant oil soaps. Basis for this is often old knowledge, given from generation to generation verbally. The predominantly manual production process is significantly noticeable in the later quality of the mild and moisturising soaps. Animal fat is consistently declined. The product range of Savon du Midi shea has scents of verbena, geranium, honey, coco, lavender, lemongrass, lime tree, almond, wild rose, vanilla, cinnamon-orange, milk and honey, orange-grapefruit, olive-lavender, and sandalwood. For making of theses soaps, only vegetable oils from controlled organic farming are used. Foundation of the outrageous quality of Savon du Midi soaps is the joint saponification of palm, coco and olive oil.
“Where olive trees grow, there is Midi”. With this simple sentence, the French botanist Luis Emberger of University of Montpellier defined the Midi, home of the olive tree. Olive oil is the origin of Savon du Marseille, the best-known French soap with the longest tradition. Savon de Marseille – a traditional soap made from olive oil – has been produced in the surroundings of Marseille for 500 years already. Ludwig XIV, the King of the Sun, was the one to set up first rules for soap making in the 17th. Century. Only soaps made in the vicinity of Marseille were allowed to carry the name Savon de Marseille, and they also had to be based on olive oil and water of the Mediterranean Sea. This act is still valid today (even if regulations allow other plant oils now).
For making this soap, olive, palm or coco oil are still used today. In large kettles they are cooked, mixed with soda, at 120°C. After rinsing with salt water a 48 hours drying period follows. Afterwards, the soap is cut in blocks and further refined.
