The myths around pomegranate date deep back into the past. According to the legend, Hades – the god of the underworld – desired Persephone, the daughter of godfather Zeus and godmother Demeter. So Hades asked Zeus if he could marry his daughter. Zeus knew that both Persephone and Demeter would never freely agree to a wedding and so he said nothing. Hades took this as agreement and abducted Persephone into his sunless kingdom of shadows. Demeter looked for her daughter everywhere and was full of concern. Filled with grief Demeter left the Olymp and told the plants to stop growing and the animals to stop breeding. The land started to barren. People died. The desperate gods pressed Zeus to force Hades to free Persephone. As Demeter was not willing to accept any negotiations, Zeus looked for a Solomonic decision. Persephone was allowed to return only, if she had not eaten anything in the underworld. Demeter agreed. The later review showed that Persephone had actually not eaten anything in her absence. Hades, loving her deeply now, did not want to surrender. He presented her a cut pomegranate with teasingly smelling, deep-red and juicy stones. Persephone could not resist and ate four of the pomegranate stones. For Hades Zeus’ requirements were met and he demanded Persephone. Zeus found himself in a dilemma. On the one hand there was his word, on the other hand was his furious wife Demeter. He decided that four pomegranate stones were not a full meal but had to be accounted for. Therefore Persephone had to spend four months per year in the underworld. During this time Demeter mourns and lets nature dry out. In the real word these are the winter months. As soon as Persephone returns to her mother spring begins. Buds bloom, warming sunlight unfolds. Flowers, plants and trees flourish in fresh glory.
The main growing areas of pomegranate trees are in the mild areas of the Mediterranean and Near East region. The orange to deep-red fruit has chambers, containing up to 400 juicy seed kernels. Contrary to other fruits like bananas, pomegranate fruits do not continue to mature after being harvested. Therefore the right moment has to be waited for to harvest them matured. Pomegranate show a richness of bio-active contents, like gamma linolenic acid, which are essential for metabolism processes. It also contains lager fractions of flavonoides, which can neutralise anti-oxidants and support cell building.
